Duties

• Performs repairs that may include removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components including replacing seals and shaft sealing rings, horns, wiring harnesses, etc.
• May assist heavy mobile equipment mechanics in the complete overhaul and repairs major systems, such as engines, transmissions, drive lines, and hydraulic utility systems
• Conducts functional checks prior to completion by operating the vehicle under conditions that simulate actual use.
• Performs routine assignments independently by selecting tools, determining appropriate techniques, and carrying out tasks with minimal review during progress
• Performs functional checks on items, with work subject to final inspection for quality of workmanship

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Work is performed in tiring or uncomfortable positions for extended periods, requiring frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Tasks may be carried out on top of, underneath, or within tight compartments of vehicles, often involving cramped or awkward positions. Items frequently lifted may weigh up to 40 pounds without assistance. Strenuous effort is required to lift, push, pull, or position these parts. Heavier items may require assistance from fellow employees or the use of lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Large vehicles may necessitate the use of ladders or work platforms to complete assigned tasks. Working Conditions: Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors, exposing the individual to drafts, changing temperatures, noise, and inclement weather. Employees are exposed to irritants and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes, and are subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Employees follow prescribed safety practices and use recommended safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, safety shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. These safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be required for extended periods. Safety and Health Requirements: Employees are required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and assigned work area, as directed by the supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to, eye protection, respiratory protection, foot protection, and protective garments (e.g., gloves, aprons, coveralls). Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. Employees will be required to wear approved hearing protection devices, and audiometric testing will be conducted as necessary when working near or around noise-hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment.
