Summary

The purpose of the position is to perform, at the sub-journeyman level, the maintenance, repair, and construction of Park trails. Duty station may be in an area away from park headquarters with general duties performed in a Park. This position requires frequent overnight backcountry stays.

Duties

  • Lead work crews in backcountry trail construction, preventative and rehabilitative maintenance of trails and related structures (bridges, retaining walls, water bars, steps). Perform stonemasonry work: select, shape, fit, and lay native stone for retaining walls, bridge abutments, water bars, retainer steps, and dry-laid stone trail tread. Perform woodworking: construct, repair, and maintain wooden foot and stock bridges, log water bars, retainer steps, and log crib walls; fall trees and shape logs. Perform rigging operations: set up and operate complex standing and running rigging systems (draglines, skylines, tightlines, A-frames) to transport native building materials in backcountry. Plan and lead backcountry camp operations; support livestock handling and packing; operate motor vehicles and small equipment to transport personnel and materials. Career Seasonal: Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately Jan-Jul & Sept-Dec, and you will be in a non-pay status (non-pay 8/1/27-8/31/27) for the remainder of the year.

Requirements Continued... QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Screen Out: Perform the common work as a maintenance worker performing intermediate trail construction and maintenance projects such as water bars, rock steps, drainage structures and signs under normal supervision. This experience includes some knowledge of carpentry, masonry, use of hand tools in a trail maintenance and construction capacity. Perform trails maintenance work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker to make sure they are properly completed. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
