Duties

  • Plans and constructs complex wooden boxes, crates, skids, and bracing structures with non-standard features.
  • Develops, improvises, and modifies complex and critical construction plans, patterns, jigs, and sequences.
  • Checks items of a difficult nature to be boxed or crated against shipping documents or invoice to ensure correct identification, quantity and condition.
  • Use woodworking tools and equipment, measures, cuts out and manufactures complex shipping container requiring critical fitted blocking, bracing, cradles, yokes, collars, or other supports necessary to provide appropriate support and protection.
  • Packs materials and equipment in standard non-standard boxes or crates using proper wrappings, liners, cradles, chocks, yokes collars, cushioning, or other protective devices.
  • Prepares packing lists, completes shipping documents, and stencils or labels identifying shipping and handling instructions on shipping container.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Wood Worker without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as Packs materials and equipment in standard or non-standard boxes or crates using proper wrappings, liners, cradles, chocks, yokes collars, cushioning, or other protective devices in accordance with proper packing procedures, Prepares packing lists, completes shipping documents, and stencils or labels identifying shipping and handling instructions on shipping container. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort The wood worker uses the power and manual tools while performing repetitive, tiring work for long periods of time. Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement is required. The incumbent sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions. The work requires continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials that weigh up to 60 pounds. Sometimes heavier weights are lifted and moved with the assistance of others or lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes. Working Conditions Work is normally performed in a shop or other enclosed areas which may be drafty, damp, or overheated. Sometimes employees work outside in fair weather, and occasionally in bad weather. Frequently exposed to sawdust, as well as other nose and lung irritation. Frequent exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, etc. Subject to possible cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, fasteners, etc. May be required to wear protective eyeglasses, ear devices, or gloves.
