Duties

  • This is an open continuous announcement to fill current and future vacancies until 02/17/2026, applicants will be referred every 30 days. Management may close this announcement early once all positions have been filled. This position is in the Facility Management, Building Services Department located in the National Gallery of Art (NGA). The NGA is comprised of 1.3 million gross square feet of building space, including the East and West Buildings, the Connecting Link, and the Sculpture Garden on the National Mall. In addition, the NGA also operates and maintains a warehouse and shop facility in Landover, Maryland, several condominium apartments, lease office space in Washington D.C., art galleries in the historic Corcoran building, and other locations when required. Duties for this position include: Handling, moving, and controlling heavy powered cleaning equipment. Performing minor equipment maintenance (i.e., pallet jacks, dollies, powered utility vehicles) Moving items which may weigh more than 80 pounds between National Gallery of Art buildings and the Sculpture Garden. Maintaining a preventive maintenance program and work order management system. Moving heavy items to allow cleaning of floors, baseboards, doors, door hardware, furniture, counter-tops, columns, ledges, stairs, stair rails, offices, and office equipment. Ensuring common areas are clean and in order. Sweeping/wet mopping floor, removing oil, hydraulic fluid, grease, and other spilled liquids. Assisting other departments in a laborer capacity. Supporting the cleaning of the Chader and Mall fountains. Participating in rotating shift schedules and weekend duty. Supporting special events and emergencies to meet the NGA mission requirements.

Qualifications

A requirement of this position is to move items which may weigh more than 80 pounds (such as office equipment, tables, chairs, furniture, and supplies). Relocates furniture and equipment such as file cabinets. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element (in bold below) which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.
