Duties
- As a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician within the California Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Supervise and mentor staff: Plans, schedules, coordinates, and supervises field and office activities; mentors employees and fosters a high-performing team; oversees employee career development, performance management, and promotion actions. Oversee hydrologic instrumentation and data collection: Manages installation, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex hydrologic instrumentation and telemetry systems; ensures compliance with field protocols and safety requirements; oversees quality assurance testing and validation of hydrologic records; prepares technical summaries and supporting materials for publications. Provide technical leadership and training: Serves as a technical authority in specialized hydrologic areas; provides advanced training to staff on field methods, instrumentation, data processing, and safety procedures; develops operational procedures and technical documentation; represents USGS in interactions with cooperators, the public, and media. Manage hydrologic projects: Develops project budgets and labor estimates; monitors milestones, schedules, and critical path tasks; coordinates staffing, training, procurement, instrumentation planning, and operational support for hydrologic projects; maintains cooperative partnerships with Federal, State, and local agencies. Promote scientific integrity and quality: Ensures compliance with the Bureau's Fundamental Science Practices; maintains high standards of scientific integrity and quality in all hydrologic data and publications; recognizes and corrects errors in calculations and prepares data for publication and distribution. Ensure property and resource management: Oversees proper acquisition, use, accountability, and control of government-owned property; applies labor and employee relations laws and addresses employee concerns; implements corrective actions and conducts facility inspections. Promotes workplace safety: Promotes safe work practices, identifies and mitigates hazards, reviews incidents, and implements corrective actions; ensures compliance with USGS safety policies, including use of PPE and boating safety requirements. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work regularly requires considerable dexterity, agility, and strenuous physical exertion such as climbing and/or working from tall ladders and scaffolding; work in areas where footing is treacherous such as slippery riverbanks, steep rocky terrain, or fast-moving water; lifting heavy objects weighing 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or more or crouching or crawling in restricted areas. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, possible aggressive wildlife encounters, and hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding, or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals. Work may require the use of special clothing or gear such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, respirators, or life jackets.
Qualifications
For GS-12: Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: Independently install, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot hydrologic instrumentation in varying field conditions. Compute, validate, and document hydrologic records, including performing quality-assurance tests and preparing approved datasets for publication. Plan and execute field data-collection activities such as conducting discharge measurements, water quality measurements, and collecting water samples. Prepare technical summaries, tables, maps, or supporting materials for hydrologic publications or data release. Ensure accuracy and clearly documented methods. Provide training or technical guidance to peers or junior staff on field methods, data processing procedures, instrumentation use, or safety requirements. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Key Requirements: Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year supervisory probationary period. More requirements are listed under Qualifications and Other Information. Selectee must provide a valid state driver's license & safe driving record. Selectee subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam. Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position? Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job. You will be required to operate a government-owned or leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record. Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued. A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.
