Range Officer

Summary

About the Position: The Range Officer is responsible for managing all aspects of the Fort Eustis training ranges, including the planning and execution of live-fire exercises, budget management, and facility maintenance. This position ensures that all training activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable regulations, while also balancing military training needs with environmental stewardship.

Duties

• Direct the Army Sustainable Range Program, overseeing scheduling, maintenance, allocation, and operational readiness of all live-fire and training complexes.
• Enforce range safety SOPs and oversee the requisition, storage, security, and issue of ammunition and equipment.
• Maintain training land portions of the Installation Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP), balancing military training missions with environmental conservation and compliance.
• Identify range modernization requirements and coordinate minor MCA construction projects with USACE, contractors, and designers.
• Develop budget projections using Army Range Requirements Model (ARRM), managing funding allocations, cost accounting, and written financial analyses.
• Plan, assign, and evaluate subordinate work, resolve grievances, manage labor relations, and recommend personnel actions.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing the operational readiness and utilization of military firing ranges and maneuver training complexes; administering range safety compliance and Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) standards; managing the financial and operational execution of range improvement programs (e.g., SRP or ITAM); and coordinating with agencies to ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
