Summary

The Motor Vehicle Operator position is located within the Environmental Management Service (EMS), VA Orlando Healthcare System (VAOHCS), Orlando, Florida, and includes support to all associated outlying community-based outpatient clinics. This position requires the following: Current/valid state-issued Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Passenger (P) endorsement No air brake restriction

Duties

• The primary purpose of this position is to operate a commercial box truck to transport linen, supplies, and cargo safely and efficiently in support of healthcare operations. The incumbent operates a 2018 International box truck (33, 000 pounds GVWR) through urban and interstate environments, covering routes to and from VAOHCS facilities and outlying clinics, on a daily basis. Other major duties include but are not limited to. Transports linen, supplies, and other cargo to and from VAOHCS facilities, outlying clinics, and designated stops through inter-city traffic and interstate highway systems, on a daily basis. Selects safe, direct routes; adheres to established schedules; and complies with all applicable Federal, state, and local traffic laws and ordinances. Obtains required delivery signatures and verifies the condition, quantity, and status of transported linen and supply items. Operates the vehicle in all weather conditions and in congested urban traffic environments. Loads and unloads linen, supplies, and cargo at each stop, using proper lifting techniques and securement methods to prevent shifting or damage during transport. Performs heavy physical tasks, including bending, lifting (50 pounds or more), turning, and moving supplies and equipment. Sustains extended periods of sitting and driving, up to eight hours per shift. Performs daily pre-departure safety inspections of the assigned vehicle and equipment, including checking tire pressure, monitoring fluid levels, and verifying proper operation of all systems. Performs preventative maintenance tasks such as washing the vehicle interior and exterior, changing tires, and making emergency field repairs. Prepares motor transportation records, trip documentation, and other required paperwork accurately and in a timely manner. Reports accidents, injuries, and safety hazards and completes required forms. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Qualifications

This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). You will be required to show your valid commercial driver's license at the time of your interview. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work is physically demanding. The incumbent sits and drives for extended periods, up to eight continuous hours, while operating a heavy-duty box truck through congested traffic and on the interstate highway system. Sustained physical attention is required to safely manage a vehicle weighing up to 33,000 pounds. Cargo handling duties require frequent bending, stooping, lifting, turning, and reaching. The incumbent regularly lifts and moves linen, supplies, and equipment, with lifting requirements of 50 pounds or more. Loading and unloading cargo in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold, adds to the physical demands of the position. Vehicle maintenance duties involve physical effort associated with checking and adding fluids, inspecting tires, changing tires, and cleaning the vehicle interior and exterior. The incumbent works in a variety of environments. Driving duties expose the incumbent to traffic hazards, including congested urban roadways, high-speed interstate highways, and adverse weather conditions such as rain, heat, and reduced visibility. Work is performed year round, regardless of weather, on a daily basis. Cargo handling duties expose the incumbent to physical hazards associated with loading and unloading supplies, including potential strain injuries and contact with delivery dock equipment. Vehicle maintenance tasks expose the incumbent to engine fluids, cleaning chemicals, and exhaust. Work may be performed in parking areas and outdoor environments subject to temperature extremes, noise, and vehicular traffic hazards. The incumbent is exposed to potential physical injury from vehicle accidents, cargo handling incidents, and equipment operation. Adherence to all applicable safety regulations, use of vehicle safety equipment, and compliance with defensive driving techniques serve to minimize these risks.
