Duties

• Plans, constructs and repairs a variety of supply, shipping, and storage containers and similar items.
• Selects proper type/grade of wood/wood substitute from a few grades of soft pine, fir, plywood, and masonite.
• Selects containers, protective devices, cushioning materials, methods, and techniques needed for packing a variety of tools, parts, equipment, and other items.
• Custom packs various items that cannot be made to fit into containers of standard size.
• Applies highly detailed knowledge of cleaning, drying, remediation and preservation methods to material.
• Operates and maintains variety of power tools, hand tools, weight handling equipment, kiln and material handling equipment.
• Detailed record keeping hand written and on computer systems.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Woodworker (Carton Making Machine Operator) without more than normal supervision (SOE): Constructs square or rectangular items such as boxes, crates, etc.; measures and saws materials to lengths that are needed; distinguishes between different sizes and kinds of lumber, such as soft pine, plywood, etc.; requires assistance to do more than routine tasks. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: The employee uses power and manual tools while performing repetitive, tiring work for long periods of time. Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement is required. Sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions. The work requires continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials that weigh 45 pounds or over. Sometimes heavier weights are lifted and moved with assistance of others or lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes. As required by duty statement, operates MHE such as fork lift, tractor, pick up truck and/or other general purpose vehicle. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in a shop or other enclosed areas which may be drafty, damp, or overheated. Sometimes employee works outside in fair weather, and occasionally in bad weather. Frequently exposed to sawdust, as well as other nose and lung irritations. Frequent exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, etc. Subject to possible cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, fasteners, etc. May be required to wear protective eyeglasses, ear devices, or gloves. SAFETY AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, foot protection, and protective clothing {gloves, apron, coveralls, etc.). Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. Employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted as necessary, when working near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment.
