Supervisory Staff Law Enforcement Ranger

Summary

You will serve as a Supervisory Staff Law Enforcement Ranger for the Bureau of Land Management. The primary purpose of the position is the management and supervision of the Law Enforcement Ranger function. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate. Duties

• Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Direct and supervise Law Enforcement Rangers, providing leadership, performance management, training oversight, discipline, and ensuring compliance with merit principles, EEO, safety, and ethics requirements. Manage the Law Enforcement Ranger Program to enforce federal laws, deter unauthorized use, protect public lands and resources, and ensure alignment with national, state, and local BLM policies. Develop, analyze, and implement strategies to prevent and reduce criminal activity and unauthorized use through data analysis, staffing plans, enforcement tactics, regulations, and facility improvements. Enforce federal and applicable state laws by conducting investigations, apprehensions, court proceedings, and special operations, maintaining operational readiness and serving as lead or incident commander when required. Plan, budget, and evaluate law enforcement operations, including annual work plans, staffing, equipment, agreements, and funding allocations, while advising leadership on policy, risk, and program performance.

Qualifications

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement - 09/17/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. This is a covered secondary law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS). In addition to the qualifying experience and/or education described above, applicants for this position must possess experience gained by substantial service in a primary law enforcement position or equivalent. Must have a current, valid State Driver's License by 09/17/2026. -AND- Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:. To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level: Experience: To qualify, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Work performed investigating violations of laws and regulations on BLM managed public lands; Preparing investigative case files according to standard operating procedures to ensure they meet legal requirements; Reviewing law enforcement regulations, policies or procedures to recommend improvements or clarifications; Knowledgeable of regulations and policies related to BLM managed public lands. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Law Enforcement Commission: Must currently possess or previously held (within the past three years), a FLETC issued Land Management Police Training, full Type I Law Enforcement Commission or equivalent; or be qualified to receive a Type 1 Commission upon appointment. This position does not allow substituting education for experience.
