Duties

  • AUSAs have the opportunity to represent the interests of the United States of America in the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. In performing this important public service, AUSAS exercise significant responsibility over their own cases in a very busy district. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. The Criminal Division prosecutes a wide range of federal cases including drug trafficking, fraud, public corruption, child exploitation, immigration, and violent crimes. The Civil Division litigates a variety of federal cases involving affirmative fraud, defensive litigation, and bankruptcy. Appellate Division AUSAS draft the government's brief and present oral arguments before the First Circuit. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. The ideal candidate will possess superior oral and written communication skills in the English language, high ethical standards and strong interpersonal skills and have demonstrated the capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. The USAO seeks highly qualified applicants with litigation experience, strong writing skills, excellent credentials, and a demonstrated commitment to public service. All AUSAs are given training by the U.S. Department of Justice and internally by the USAO Training Program. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Strong communication skills in English, including reading, writing and speaking English is imperative. Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred. Candidates must be computer literate. Strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability to accurately and precisely articulate critical case related issues, courtroom experience, good interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with client agencies, support staff and other attorneys, and a demonstrated commitment to public service. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
