Summary
The Incumbent serves within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) at the Salisbury VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC, as a Staff Kinesiotherapist. The incumbent who works at this level provides assessment and treatment intervention on an independent basis across the continuum of care and services provided by PM&RS.
Duties
- Duties of Gerofit Coordinator - Kinesiotherapist position includes but are not limited to: The incumbent works autonomously as a staff kinesiotherapist to complete clinical duties as assigned including developing and implementing physically therapeutic treatment; using judgment to modify treatment based on changing medical conditions or due to complexity of disabilities; working effectively with treatment team and other staff in coordinating patient's total care; and clinically supervising therapy assistants, aides and volunteers as assigned. Assists in orientation of new students, staff KT's, Veterans to each clinical area/ session. These duties require monitoring and checking the completion of various competencies related to equipment, procedure and protocol for general PM&RS knowledge as well as clinic specific needs. Initiates and maintains positive communication with each veteran referred to our clinics prior to, during, and after discharge. Assists in arranging additional learning experiences within the facility to provide the staff with greater understanding of comprehensive care for our patients in Gerofit. Assists in continual refinement of program with the goal of establishing and maintaining a premiere Gerofit experience based on evidence based best practice and novel approaches. Designs, conducts and evaluates the Gerofit Program experiences and actively seeks additional enrollment opportunities to enhance the program. Represents PM&RS at various clinical and educational activities at the discretion of the PM&RS section clinical leadership team. Demonstrates the teaching skills required to provide education to patients, family members, caregivers, employees, students, and coworkers. Communicates effectively with other internal and external health care providers. Completes all required written reports and clinical documentation in a clear and concise manner and within expected time frames. The incumbent continually seeks to improve knowledge and skill by review of current literature, participation in in-service training, and attendance at continuing education programs especially in their area of expertise. Continuing education and training will be focused on maintaining and improving competency in all general clinical functions but will also include coursework directed toward the development and improvement of clinical instruction, data collections and reporting techniques, and utilization and reporting of outcome measures. Conducts record keeping related to patient care documentation and quality improvement (QI) data collection as specified by the PM&RS section clinical leadership team and the GRECC. Responsible for collection and reporting of QI data as requested by the PM&RS section clinical leadership team. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm Telework: Adhoc, as determined by the agency policy. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Kinesiotherapist candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403 (f). Education: A bachelor's degree [or higher from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program, with a concentration/emphasis in kinesiotherapy. OR A bachelor's degree or higher with a concentration/emphasis in kinesiotherapy or exercise science related field and registered as a kinesiotherapist in good standing with the COPSKT. OR A master's degree or higher with a degree in exercise science, kinesiology, human performance or a related field, which has been approved by COPSKT and a certificate verifying completion of a Center of Excellence (COE) Kinesiotherapy clinical training program. The completion of the certificate ensures that COPSKT has approved the degree program as part of the application process for the COE internship. Registration: All applicants must be registered in kinesiotherapy in good standing with the COPSKT. Foreign Graduates: Graduates of a foreign program must meet the requirements in subparagraph 4b if they have a full unrestricted and current registration to practice kinesiotherapy in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. They must have at a minimum, proof of a degree from an accredited college or university (or foreign equivalent, as verified through an independent credentialing evaluation company). Failure to Obtain Registration: In all cases kinesiotherapists must actively pursue meeting registration starting from the date of appointment. At the time of appointment, the supervisor must provide the unregistered kinesiotherapist with a written requirement to obtain registration, the date by which the registration must be acquired, and the consequences for not becoming registered by the deadline. Failure to become registered within two years from the date of appointment, will result in removal from the GS-0635, Kinesiotherapist series; and may result in termination of employment. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Kinesiotherapist (Program Coordinator), GS-12 Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and to provide advice to staff on planning and implementation of comprehensive treatment programs. Knowledge of VA policies and procedures to represent the medical center. Knowledge and skills to analyze, evaluate, and monitor issues concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of programs that will impact activities or functions such as: supplies, equipment, budget, and recruitment. Skill in providing clinical and administrative oversight of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to collaborate with strategic planning committees at local, VISN, or national level for new ventures addressing patient care delivery systems, facilities management, systems reorganization, etc. Ability to provide guidance and advise program administrators, members of the community, and medical center leadership. Preferred Experience: Experience in maintaining a budget for programming and have experience in program management.
